Congratulations to the recipients of our Home Energy Makeover!
Steve and Rhonda Thomas, of Fresno!
We received an astounding number of submissions for the Makeover- well over 100 nominations! We had NO idea how difficult it would be to read these stories and have to come to a decision of picking just one of these homes and families! There were many tears shed here over the last few weeks. We were so encouraged to read stories from so many thoughtful people who were nominating someone they cared about. We were also heartbroken to read so many hard stories about so many hurting people in our community. We want to thank everyone who participated in nominating themselves or someone they know. Without all of you, we would not have been able to find the family to help out. We also want to thank those who let us take the time to come into their homes to meet them, and open up to us about their lives. We greatly appreciate it, and you really touched our hearts.
Let us tell you a little about the family that was chosen:
Steve and Rhonda have six children, four of them living at home. They live in a home built in the 1950’s. Their friend, Laura, submitted the nomination. One of their children, 28-year old J.J. is special needs. J.J. has physical disabilities that keep him in a wheelchair, and cognitive disabilities (functions at an 8-10-year old level), but is the most delightful, pleasant, funny person.
After a few years of chronic intermittent illnesses and many, many trips to the emergency room, Steve was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer referred to as carcinoid. This type of cancer is hard to diagnose and is hard to treat, as most oncologists are unfamiliar with the intricacies of this form of cancer. He has injections every two weeks. He has injections Friday so he can rest over the weekend, and go back to work Monday.
Despite Steve’s illness and all that cancer and chemotherapy entails, Steve has continued to go to work. When his symptoms get particularly bad, he will go into the hospital, get to a point where he can function again, and go right back to work. Providing for his family is way more important to him than his own comfort.
The home’s air conditioning has not worked for quite some time. Because of their son’s condition, air conditioning & heating are a priority. We are going to providing them with some air sealing for the home, wall and attic insulation, roof repairs, electrical repairs, new heating & cooling system including ductwork, and a possibility of a few other items.
Our team is so excited to get working on this project, volunteering their time, and help make this home more comfortable and energy efficient. Be looking for more details and photos to come.

Summer is here and the Central Valley gets very hot this time of year. Cooling stations are crowded and utility bills take a steep hike, which many families just can’t afford. Allbritten Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning is helping out one family in need with a Home Energy Makeover. People can nominate themselves or someone they know to receive this makeover to help lower their energy bills and stay comfortable in their home.
Every year, we participate in charity work and this year we thought we would take a different approach and volunteer our time to help out a local family who may need a new air conditioner, maybe some insulation and air sealing in their home, a new water heater or new duct work but just couldn’t afford it.
There is no job too small or too large, but this is focused on finding someone based on that family or individual’s need, rather than looking for the largest energy bill. Since each home has different needs, an exact cost of this project has not been set. Some of the items that may be included in this makeover project could be fixing an existing, or installing a new heating and air conditioning system, fixing or installing new duct work, fixing plumbing issues, replacing the water heater, air sealing leaks and insulating an attic or crawl space and many more options.
