Winter weather is on the way. Is your furnace ready? Cranking up the heat only to find that the system isn’t working is inconvenient when the weather outside is cold. 5 signs you need a new heating system installed in your home
1. Your energy bills are higher
The older your furnace system is, the more energy it will need to use to heat your home. Even then, an older furnace won’t heat your home quite as well as it used to. When the system works harder to keep your house warm, it shows up on your energy bill. If your bill seems significantly higher this winter compared to last season, it may be one of the signs you need a new heating system.
2. The system makes strange sounds
While it’s normal to hear some noise as your system kicks on, a sound you aren’t accustomed to could indicate that there are significant problems with your furnace. Signs of age include banging, rattling, and squealing noises. In such situations, it’s best to turn the system off and have a professional look at it.
3. Your furnace starts and stops more than it used to
When your furnace is properly installed, it should run consistently without constantly starting and stopping. As the system ages and becomes less efficient, it will turn itself off-and-on more often as it struggles to keep the room at the temperature you prefer.
By the way, this is a good reason to have a professional install your new furnace or air conditioner. An improperly sized HVAC unit—that is, one that is too small or too large for your home and your comfort needs—is going to either over-run or constantly start-and-stop.
4. There is visible damage to your system
Your furnace is made of metal components that expand and contract as the system works. Over time, the repeated expansion and contraction can cause the metal to crack. In a worst-case scenario, cracked metal can cause the release carbon monoxide into your home.
If you notice physical damage to your furnace, turn the system off and call the pros at Allbritten in for a system inspection. We’ll be able to tell you whether or not your system is safe to continue using.
5. Your system frequently needs repairs
Maintenance and repairs for your furnace are expected and necessary on occasion, but a system that has you calling Allbritten frequently for heating repairs is probably one that needs to be replaced. Consider this: the money that you’re putting into repairs could go into a new furnace—one that is more energy-efficient and less likely to breakdown.
If you’ve been doing 2-3 repairs per-winter for the past two winters, it’s probably a good idea to get a free in-home estimate from us on a new furnace.
