Hard water: What is it, and why do you need a water softener?

Most people take the water that comes out of their tap for granted. Beyond the other stuff that can be in your home’s drinking and potable water, there’s something else you need to think about: hard water. Here in Fresno, our exceptionally hard water makes a water softener a necessity.

A water softener treats a hard water problem by removing the buildup of minerals that can damage your  home’s plumbing. It effectively removes the minerals such as calcium and magnesium carbonates through an ion exchange process. The device can increase the lifespan of the plumbing fixtures, and reduce plumbing repair costs.

In this article, we will take a look at some of the reasons why it’s important to soften hard water by installing a water softener.

Hard water buildup and water softenerWhat is hard water?

Thanks to gravity, water is always on the move. In rivers, it can carve canyons and create valleys. Underground in aquifers and wells, water slips between rocks. All that time, the water is brushing against rock, scraping off minerals such as calcium and magnesium. It’s the presence of minerals that makes water “hard” as opposed to “soft.”

Does Fresno have hard water?

Yes, we do. Here in Fresno, our water, on average, is 122 parts-per-million. According to the scale developed by the Water Quality Association, that means our water here in town is classified as “hard.”

If your home’s water is drawn exclusively from underground sources, your water might even be harder than that. That’s because aquifer sources are typically “harder” than surface water sources.

So, what’s the problem?

First, let’s clear something up: there’s no health risk for you and your family as a result of hard water. (Although, there’s other reasons you should consider a whole-home water filtration system). However, hard water can do a number on your home’s plumbing and appliances. Let’s explain why.

As mineral-rich hard water passes through the pipes and plumbing of your home, those minerals leech out of the water and stick to the inside of the pipe. Over time, this results in the buildup of calcium commonly known as “scale”.

What else does hard water impact?

The flow of water in your home can be reduced because of this blockage in the pipe. The result is that you’ll need to re-pipe your home—an expensive proposition—a lot sooner than you would have otherwise. It’s a major problem here in Fresno.

However, that’s not all. Those minerals are also being pumped into your dishwasher and washing machine every time you use them, causing damage and reducing the lifespan of your appliances.

Your water heater is particularly vulnerable. After all, it has water inside of it at all times. Mineral buildup can negatively impact the anode rod, and deposits of just 1/16 of an inch can negate your water heater’s energy-efficiency, increasing your home energy costs.

Hard water impacts your home comfort

The wrong type of water can have major impacts on your home’s comfort. Here’s just some of the ways that hard water negatively impacts your home:

  • Your laundry will be stiff and dingy because detergents will not work as well with hard water. In addition, the minerals in the water, over time, wear down the colors in your favorite outfits.
  • Your skin will be drier, itchier, and harder to deal with, and you’ll feel like your hair is under attack. Hard water can aggravate symptoms of eczema.
  • Soap, shampoo, and conditioners will work less effectively and you’ll need to use more of them with each shower to get the same results you would have had otherwise with softened water.

How can a water softener help?

As the name implies, water softeners remove the minerals that make water hard, rendering it soft. Water softeners are popular here in Fresno because of our exceptionally hard water.

A water softener is a good long-term investment to protect your appliances, water heater, and home plumbing. Plus, it’ll make your skin and hair feel great!

Plus, maintenance is a good investment that will save you money in the long run.

What is the Guardian Maintenance Club?

We get it: HVAC maintenance probably isn’t the most exciting thing to have circled in your calendar. It’s easy to forget about your air conditioner or furnace—unlike your car in the example above, you’re not directly interacting with them on a daily basis.

Perk #2: You’ll save a lot of money

Guardian Maintenance Club members save money on two fronts. First, there’s the energy savings from having an Allbritten technician complete a thorough AC or furnace tune-up. Since both systems will receive service, that adds up to major, year-round savings.

Second, we throw in a 15% off all repairs bonus, as a ‘thank you’ for being a member. Here’s what’s cool: that 15% off applies to all of our services, not just air conditioning and heating. Need plumbing help? You’ll get 15% off of our repair work.

Preventative plumbing: 5 ways to prevent major plumbing issues

How to prevent major plumbing issuesOut-of-sight, out-of-mind.

This old saying applies to your home’s plumbing. Most people tend to ignore the network of pipes inside the walls that delivers cold and hot water to showers, tubs, and sinks. They don’t think about the pipes that carry away waste and water.

However, giving your plumbing a little extra thought can help you prevent major plumbing issues. In this article, we’ll share 5 preventive plumbing tips that will help you avoid plumbing disaster.

Need help with your home’s plumbing, or have a plumbing issue? Contact our professional plumbers at Allbritten.

1. Address leaks immediately by calling Allbritten

A simple constant drip from the faucet can result in significantly increased water bills.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that leaky faucets results in the waste of more than three thousand gallons every year. A single leaky faucet can add about $15 to the bill. Multiple leaks inside the house can increase the bills considerably.

In addition, the environmental cost of the wastage of precious water can be great. That’s why it’s important that you address leaky issues immediately by calling in the professional plumbers from Allbritten.

2. Replace rubber hoses with stainless steel braided hoses

Your washing machine’s rubber hoses are at risk of unexpected bursting. This can happen when no one is around the house, resulting in massive water leakage—about five gallons per minute.

To avoid this problem, it’s important that you replace the rubber hose of the washing machine with a stainless steel braided hose. This will help you prevent unexpected plumbing emergencies.

3. Don’t pour grease down your drains

Grease buildup inside your drains is a major problem. Over time, accumulated grease can clog your sink or, worse, your sewer, causing a sewer backup. For this reason, you should avoid pouring grease down the drain.

Instead, you should consider discarding grease in a plastic container or jar. This will not only prevent plumbing issues, but also help out the environment.

Have a clogged sink or think you have a sewer backup issue? Stop running water and contact the plumbers here at Allbritten right away.

4. Prevent clogs, when possible

Another one of the major plumbing issues you’ll face as a homeowner is clogged drains. This is usually caused by the hairs that accumulate inside the drains.

The best way to avoid this issue is to place a drain screen. This will prevent buildup of hair inside the drain. The finer the screen, the better it will be able to prevent hair from clogging the drain.

5. Call Allbritten with both your minor and major plumbing issues

Don’t procrastinate when you have minor plumbing issues, or you risk them turning into major plumbing issues. Instead, contact us at Allbritten. We have a team of highly experienced plumbers who can perform all kinds of repairs at an affordable cost.

Avoid DIY drain cleaning and call the professionals

Why you Should Avoid DIY Drain CleaningWhen it comes to drain cleaning, most people think that they can do the task themselves. After all, DIY drain cleaning doesn’t seem to hard. There’s all sorts of products out there to dump down the drain.

However, while drain cleaning may seem like a simple DIY task, the reality is that it can be dangerous and could cost you more money than if you had called an expert.

Here, we will look at three main reasons why you should leave the drain cleaning to the experts at Allbritten.

1. You could damage your home’s drain pipes

Trying to clean the drain yourself can result in damage to the drain pipes. This is particularly the case if you use a commercial cleaner to clean the drain.

These products contain acidic solutions such as sulfuric acid that can corrode the pipes. Regular use of the cleaner can cause great damage to the pipes that will require costly repairs.

2. Most cleaners aren’t effective in clearing deeply clogged drains

You might be able to resolve simple clogs close to the drain through DIY drain cleaning. But the DIY approach will not work with clogs that are deep within the drain. Using metal snakes improperly can result in damage to the pipes. For serious clogs, you should always call an expert rather than try to resolve the problem yourself.

Different drain issues require different plumbing equipment. Professional plumbers have a large variety of plumbing tools. They know which tool will help in effectively cleaning the drain. You can save a lot of hassles and money if you call an expert plumber to clean the drain.

3. In some cases, DIY drain cleaning is dangerous

An important reason that you should avoid DIY drain cleaning is that it can be dangerous. The harsh draining cleaning chemicals can cause skin irritations if there’s exposure. You can also cut yourself on broken metal or get your hand stuck in a pipe.

In contrast, our professional plumbers are trained in the safe usage of drain cleaning chemicals and tools. They know what precautions to take when cleaning the drain. They are trained to perform the job safely.

Skip the DIY drain cleaning and call Allbritten for drain cleaning services

Trying to clean the drain yourself may look tempting. However, it’s recommended that you hire an experienced plumber to clean your drains. You can get injured or damage the pipes if you try to clean the drain yourself.

In fact, you can end up paying more money even when trying to fix a simple drain problem. The next time the drain clogs, it’s better that you save yourself from the problems and risks of DIY drain cleaning and call a professional.

3 reasons AC maintenance is a good investment (and why you should join our Guardian Maintenance Club)

AC Maintenance Is A Good InvestmentYour air conditioner is a major investment in the current and future comfort of your home. That makes AC maintenance a good investment in the future of your air conditioner. Allbritten is the place to schedule your AC tune-up and join our Guardian Maintenance Club.

Reasons to schedule AC maintenance with Allbritten

The problem with central air conditioners is ‘out sight out of mind.’ Most people tend to neglect the need to tune up their air conditioner. The obvious result is more frequent air conditioner breakdowns that causes a lot of inconvenience for the household.

An annual air conditioner tune-up will not only reduce the risk of emergency breakdowns, it will also ensure less frequent need for costly repairs and improved indoor air quality. Dust and mold will develop in the ducts if the AC is not maintained regularly. Here are some of the other benefits of regular AC inspection.

1. Increased system efficiency

All mechanical systems require regular service to ensure optimal operation. And this is the case with air conditioners as well. If you neglect regular tune-up of the air conditioner, it can cost you more money in the long run. There will be more frequent breakdowns and major faults will develop that will make a big dent in your pockets.

2. Increased lifespan

Another benefit of regular air conditioner tune up is that it will add years to the unit’s lifespan. With regular maintenance, your cooling device can last for 20 years or even more. An air conditioner is a big investment for most people. So, it’s important that you have the system tuned up regularly to ensure that the unit lasts for a long time.

3. Save money in long run

A regular air conditioner tune-up will help you save money in the long run. The system will break down less frequently. This will result in great cost savings for you. The increased lifespan of the unit will also ensure that you don’t spend a large sum a few years after purchasing a unit.

Maintenance is a good investment

You should consider having the air conditioner checkered once or twice a year even if the system is working fine. There might be hidden issues with the air conditioner that if not addressed immediately could lead to costly repairs.

It is recommended that you have the air conditioner serviced by an experienced technician. Regular inspection of the unit will ensure optimal cooling, increased energy efficiency, and maximum comfort for your household.

Over time, your air conditioner accumulates dirt and dust in critical components such as condensing coils. A technician will inspect the condensing coil and filters during the regular inspection and perform the required repairs.

Here are four signs that you need to install a new air conditioner

Install A New Air ConditionerAir conditioners are an important component inside the house. The equipment keeps the rooms cool and comfortable during the hot summer months.

We can safely say that without an air conditioning unit, we will not be able to enjoy our stay at our homes or offices.

That’s why it’s important to ensure that your air conditioner is properly maintained so that it continues to provide cool air during summers.

Like all mechanical devices, air conditioners have a limited life. No matter how well you maintain the cooling unit, a time will come when you will have no other options than to install a new air conditioner.

Here are four tell-tale signs that indicate that you should think about replacing your old air conditioner with a new one. Call Allbritten for a free in-home estimate and installing a new air conditioner.

1. Your air conditioner is not turning on

The obvious sign that you may need to install a new air conditioner is when it doesn’t turn on. However, before you call a contractor to replace the unit, you should first check whether the cooling device is really dead.

Check whether the thermostat battery needs replacement. Also, you should double-check the circuit breaker to ensure that it has not tripped. A faulty wiring may also be the culprit for the air conditioner not turning on.

A professional air conditioner service technician will be able to determine whether there is something to fix or whether you need to install a new unit. Call Allbritten for AC repair services.

2.  There’s no cool air coming from the registers

Air conditioners should generate cool air when you set the thermostat to ‘cool’ mode. In case cool air does not come from the air register, you may need to have Allbritten inspect your system, and possibly  install a new air conditioner.

The most common reason that the air conditioner does not generate cool air is a faulty compressor. It can cost a great deal to repair the compressor. You should talk with one of our professionals to get the pros and cons of “replace versus repair” options.

3. Your air conditioner is getting older

If your air conditioning unit is more than 20 years old, you should definitely consider installing a new air conditioner. Older units are not as energy efficient as new units. They tend to take more power that jacks up the energy bills.

Moreover, old air conditioners tend to use R-22 refrigerants that are considered harmful to the environment.

So, when you replace your old cooling device, you will not only save on energy bills, but also play your part in ensuring a green and more hospitable environment.

4. Strange noises are coming from the system

If you hear strange noises from the air conditioning unit, your air conditioner is probably at the end of its life. Noise tends to come from the air conditioners due to a faulty motor or compressor, which are costly to repair.

You should call a pro to check out the system. If the cooling device requires expensive repairs you should think about installing a new air conditioner.

Call Allbritten to learn if you need to install a new air conditioner

If you live in Fresno, California or the surrounding areas, you should contact Allbritten professional service technicians for new air conditioner installation.

Cold Air Blowing From The Furnace? Here’s What The Problem Might Be

Troubleshoot Cold Air Blowing from the FurnaceOne problem that may develop with the furnace is that it sometimes blows cold air out of the registers. Here are just a few of the reasons that you have cold air blowing from the furnace.

1. Inspect the fuel source

Make sure there is no disruption in the fuel supply. If you have electric furnace, make sure the switch is turned on. In case of a gas heater, the gas valve should be open. Oil tanks must have appropriate amount of oil to effectively heat the house.

The furnace will not be able to generate warm air if the supply line is cut off resulting in cold air to blow through the ducts.

2. Examine the air filter

A clogged air filter will result in inefficient operation of the furnace. Dirt and dust that accumulates on the filter will prevent air to reach the furnace. As a result, the furnace will take longer to generate the heat.

If the filter is not cleaned, the furnace will eventually stop blowing warm air, and cold air will flow from the outside and circulate inside the rooms.

3. Inspect the thermostat

In certain situations, a thermostat can also make the furnace blow cold air. This will usually be the case when the temperature battery is dead. Also, if the thermostat is set at a lower temperature than the house temperature, it can result in cold air to blow from the furnace.

Sometimes setting the thermostat to ON instead of AUTO results in cold air to blow from the system. This is especially the case if you notice that the blower is constantly running but the furnace tends to blow cold air occasionally.

4. Cracks inside the ductwork

A crack inside the ductwork can allow cold air to seep inside the system. The furnace may be functioning properly but the warm air might be blown out of the registers. A professional furnace technician can carefully inspect the ductwork to find out if the cold air is really blowing inside through a crack.

5. Pilot light problem

A faulty pilot light can also be the cause of cool air from blowing from the air registers. The pilot light is a small flame in gas furnaces that must burn continuously for the furnace to generate warm air. Keep in mind that the pilot light should only be lit by a professional as lighting it yourself pose a fire hazard.

Why you should get water filtration in Fresno

When you buy a home and move in, you take the water that comes out of the kitchen tap, through the toilet, and out the shower head for granted. After all, it’s all just water, right? However, water filtration in Fresno is more important than you think, as your tap water could contain things that are dangerous to your appliances and your health.

In this blog post, we’ll outline just some of the reasons you should have Allbritten install a HALO water filtration system in your home. For a quote, give us a call at (559) 292-4919 or contact us online.

What is hard water?

Like much of the rest of the state, Fresno’s water is harder than in other parts of the country. Pumped from underground wells, this water has a greater proportion of minerals and salts than fresh water on the surface contained in lakes and rivers. Most experts agree that there’s nothing dangerous about drinking hard water—in fact, hard water can inadvertently supply your body with the nutrients you need. However, hard water has another impact that often leads people to install what are known as water softeners.

Over time, the minerals in hard water can collect on water fixtures, inside of pipes, and on drains. Known as “scale” (short for limescale), this discoloration can really make a mess of your kitchen and bathroom. Hard water is especially hard on your home appliances that intake water, such as your washing machine and your dishwasher. Their intake valves can eventually experience scale buildup so extreme that it partially clogs them.

There are other benefits to hard water, such as the fact that it often “tastes” better and helps you get soap out of your hair while showing. But, many owners looking for water filtration in Fresno are looking for a water softening solution to avoid damage to appliances.

Importance of water filtration in Fresno

In October, we wrote about how certain parts of Fresno were struggling with rust-colored water coming out the tap; a change in water chemistry at a water treatment plant led to corrosion in some water pipes in some Fresno homes. Allbritten has been helping some of those homeowners replace the pipes in their home. But, that problem and other issues highlight the importance of water filtration in Fresno.

Unfortunately, Fresno’s tap water might not be that great to begin with. Out of the nation’s 100 largest cities, the Environmental Working Group names Fresno as the city with the 11th worst municipal water supply. Over 30 chemicals have been found in the water, most principally nitrates—a common problem for cities surrounded by agriculture. This water issue has contributed to a negative reputation for Fresno’s water, and it’s why residential water filtration in Fresno matters.

HALO Water Filtration In FresnoYou have options

So, an in-home water filtration system sounds like a good idea. You’re in luck. Here at Allbritten, we install some of the most advanced water filtration systems on the market: HALO Water Systems. They have multiple models—whole-home, in-line, and guard—with different purposes and abilities. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • HALO’s whole-home systems, such as the HALO 5 and the HALO Pure Deluxe, not only remove contaminants from the water, but they also soften it. They’re a perfect solution for when you want complete water filtration in Fresno.
  • HALO’s in-line systems, such as the HALO Ion, can be installed on pipe and are designed to prevent the scale buildup from hard water. While they don’t soften water, they do protect your appliances from corrosion.
  • HALO’s water heater guardian is similar to the in-line system, but is specifically designed to protect your water heater from hard water corrosion. Again, this system doesn’t soften or purify water, but it does prevent your water heater from being damaged.

What it means to be a Carrier Factory-Authorized Dealer in Fresno

Allbritten has been serving Fresno and the Central Valley for 84 years. During that time, we’ve seen a lot of changes: the entire definition of what it means to be a “home services” company has completely shifted in those eight decades. There’s two things that are still the same, though: our personal, attentive customer service and Carrier. In fact, they’ve been around even longer than we have!

As a Carrier Factory-Authorized Dealer, Allbritten is backed by one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of air conditioners and furnaces. Carrier holds us to high standards and guarantees our customers that they’re getting a good deal they can trust. In this blog post, we’ll review what it means for us to be a Carrier Factory-Authorized Dealer.

Carrier Factory-Authorized DealerWhat makes Carrier a better manufacturer?

There are many HVAC system manufacturers in the world today, but only one of them can be the best, and Carrier has quite the resume. Founded in 1902, Carrier has been at the forefront of cooling and heating technology in the decades since. Starting with the invention of the modern air conditioner to pioneers in energy efficient, quiet technology today, Carrier has redefined what’s possible in home comfort.

Here at Allbritten, we like partnering with Carrier for several reasons. First, they manufacture some of the best air conditioners and furnaces on the market today. They’re more energy efficient and powerful than the competition. Second, Carrier systems are built well and made to last. This makes them reliable and extends their lifespan, which helps our customers avoid large repair costs. Finally, Carrier offers extensive manufacturer warranties on all of their new systems, which gives our customers extra protection for years after their purchase.

What is a Carrier Factory-Authorized Dealer?

New HVAC Unit in FresnoA Carrier Factory-Authorized Dealer is a business that has met Carrier’s exacting standards for quality service and technicians. Similar to car dealerships, many Authorized Dealers specialize in one brand of HVAC system, and Allbritten installs just Carrier systems. This means that our technicians and team lives and breathes Carrier.

Carrier has high expectations for their authorized dealers. For instance, Allbritten’s representatives go to train at Carrier University, where they learn how to measure homes and fit them for the right kind of air conditioner or furnace. We’re required to use Carrier’s parts and tools—many of which are a finer quality than the generic stuff other companies use.

Carrier also endorses Allbritten’s insurance and liability coverage, that our technicians meet factory standards, and that we, as a company, back all of work with guarantees and stick to them.
